At 1:27 pm, the South Duty crew arrived in Engine 1 and discovered a dog was indeed through the ice near the 43200 block of Alva Court (East Huron River Drive and Martinsville Road area) and was unable to free itself.
Other Fire- Rescue crews began to arrive and Fire Personnel, dressed in suits specifically made for cold water rescues, entered the icy water and rescued the dog without incident.
A second dog was located on shore, in the immediate area, and it was also wetappearing to have rescued itself prior to the Fire Department's arrival. Both dogs were placed in layered blankets for warmth and transported to the Belleville Animal Hospital where Public Safety Personnel were met with open arms by the Animal Hospital staff.
During a quick assessment of the dog rescued from the water, it appears hypothermia may have begun to set in and would have likely not been able to survive much longer had it not been for the quick actions taken by an observant neighbor to call for help.
Contact was made with the dogs' owner who responded immediately to the Animal Hospital to check on the condition of them. It appears that the dogs accidently escaped from the yard and then wandered onto the ice.
An employee from the Belleville Animal Hospital said both dogs brought in were fine and went home with their owners that day. She said the dog that had to be rescued from the lake was hypothermic but was warmed up with blankets and a hot water bag.
