The millage levy is expected to generate $80 million for the construction bonds to pay for the new high school which will incorporate existing facilities such as the auditorium, the cafeteria, music room and administration building. In addition, a 1.13 millage levy for facilities improvements also was moved to the November ballot.
Both of the millage votes were originally slated to appear on the August primary election ballot. Superintendent Pete Lazaroff said Monday that administration along with the schools' bond council decided it was best to delay the vote until November.
"There are not many contested elections on the primary ballot, we would like to see a larger turnout in order to get a better reflection of what the community wants," Lazaroff said. "As a side benefit, we now will have added time to have meetings about the bond issue."
The bond proposal will mark the third time in just four years that school officials have sought a millage for a new high school. Each proposal has been voted down, with the latest rejection in February 2006 when 60 percent of 7,000 voters casting a "no" vote in a special election.
